Woodruff dried herb
Plant Family: Rubiaceae
Also Called: Galium odoratum, Sweet Woodruff, Wild Baby’s Breath, Waldmeister, and Master of the Woods.
The aromatic strength of Woodruff intensifies when it is dried, making it a popular addition to sachets and potpourris.
Sweet woodruff plants have also been used commercially in perfumes.
The leaves are used to flavour teas and cold fruit drinks.
It is also used in our popular Herbal Smoking blends for those trying to give up the Tobacco habit.
Woodruff also helps to induce a restful sleep, and can be used alongside Hops to enhance the effect.
Many people have stated that Woodruff repels Moths, so it is also ideal for adding to pot Pourri blends and sachets to keep in your wardrobe/drawers etc.
Used both internally and topically, this herb has been taken for symptoms of intestinal discomfort, abdominal cramps, headaches, migraines, and varicose veins. It is also believed to have properties beneficial for strengthening the heart, and has been used as a treatment for Kidney Stones, Bladder Stones and Liver disease.
The coumarin glucosides contained in the plant ferment as they dry, producing coumarin and dicumarol, its medicinally active ingredients.
These ingredients both act as anticoagulants and help to counteract excessive clotting of the blood. Anyone with circulatory problems or who is using medication for thinning the blood should not use this plant under any conditions, as it may cause internal bleeding when taken in large doses.
As always when using natural plants, please consult a qualified medical practitioner BEFORE ingesting these herbs.
