The Carolina Reaper is a cultivar of chilli pepper of the Capsicum chinense species, originally named the “HP22BNH”, bred by Ed Currie, who runs PuckerButt Pepper Company in Fort Mill, South Carolina, United States. As of 2012, it is officially the world’s hottest pepper.
The original crossbreed was between a Ghost Chili pepper and a Red Habanero pepper.[1] The “Carolina Reaper” has been rated as the world’s hottest chili pepper by Guinness World Records since August 07, 2013.[2] It averages a 1,569,300 on the Scoville scale with peak levels of over 2,200,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU).
The Trinidad Moruga Scorpion was the previous world’s hottest chilli pepper, with some specimens of this piquant plant registering more than 2 million Scoville heat units (SHU). That means each little bundle of joy packs the heat of roughly 400 jalapeños.
The Scorpion gives a sweet-hot fruit flavour.
The Ghost Chilli still remains the most consistent heat chilli, giving around 1 million SHU per chilli across the whole range without variation.
WARNING: Be careful handling these chillies, as they can cause a painful burning sensation.
Avoid contact with the eyes or any sensitive skin before washing your hands thoroughly.
